Let’s Get Practical
Let’s Get Practical | September 2021
When designing a kitchen, we talk a lot about the "fun" stuff – cabinets, hardware, backsplash, flooring – but what about the things that really make your kitchen functional? They may not be as sexy as unlacquered brass pulls but they will make your life a lot easier. Today, I am sharing some practical things that will make a big difference.
Under Counter Microwave First, putting your microwave under the counter will hide a not so pretty appliance from view. Second, it is just easier to access. And if you have little kids in the house, you will never have to pop a bag of popcorn again. You will thank me later!
Touchless Faucet A touchless faucet makes prep around the kitchen much easier. When my husband said that that was the only thing he had to have in our old kitchen, I knew I had to give in. Now this is the kitchen appliance I love the most! The Delta Trinsic is great looking in my opinion. And another bonus: it also conserves water because it stops running after a few minutes.
Hidden Coffee Bar Not many coffee machines are pretty except for the really expensive ones so I say hide them and all of the accoutrements behind a cabinet door. Plus, having everything together sure makes mornings go more smoothly. I love this one that designer Jean Stoffer designed.
Beverage Drawers I love a beverage drawer. I actually love kitchen drawers in general. Think about how the back of your lower cabinets are big black holes. Drawers are so much easier to organize. At our house, we keep kid drinks in one drawer and adult beverages in the other.
Practical Countertops I love the look of marble but save it for an area that doesn’t get as much use like a backsplash. It just isn’t forgiving and there are so many other great options out there. One of my favorites is Taj Mahal Quartzite. It is stunning and super durable. Now that is what I call a win win.
Just remember that your home can be both functional and beautiful. At the end of the day, I want my clients to love living in their homes and I believe practicality is an important part of that equation. If you would like some help making your kitchen work for you (and pretty too), please reach out - I would love to help you!
Until next time,
